Seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
