Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
