In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
