Lifetime of Salary Insufficient for UK Employees to Enter Richest 10%, Report Says

According to fresh research, the average employee in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of earnings to reach the financial standing of the richest 10% of the population.

Growing Economic Disparity Over Time

The analysis reviewed wealth distribution information including the recent health crisis years and determined that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have needed nearly four decades of typical employment income to reach the top 10th of the wealth distribution.

A research lead associated with the report commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee setting aside their entire income throughout their career would still not be able to reach the top of the economic scale."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The study discovered that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and an individual in the richest segment was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had widened to 1.3 million pounds in actual value by recent times.

The researcher continued: "These disparities are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is limited – those who commence life wealthy tend to continue being rich, and the opposite holds true."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Even with the economic divide growing in absolute terms, the portion of total wealth in the UK held by the richest households – known as "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," according to the study.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK rose substantially from thrice the yearly economic output, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Termed "automatic" gains, via growing real estate costs and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, as stated in the analysis.

These increases tended to accrue to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Age-Based Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and those in their early 60s more than doubled in inflation-adjusted terms, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to £310k.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced geographic differences, with the typical amount of assets in recent years amounting to £290k in the southeastern region, where housing costs have generally grown substantially, versus 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when numerous employees were covered under the public-funded employment protection, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate countless homes were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, though. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (across the pandemic timeframe), roughly identical to the 24 months before COVID. In contrast, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their available funds increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
