The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
